At the end of their vacation Jo suggests
leaving by train because a local told her the
steamship has a habit of sinking
“Your colors can only take so much water”
The rattling carriage slices through the dusky downtown
Hopper spots lobstermen hunched over cups of coffee
in dusty diners with pressed tin walls
then passes rows of white houses
where families in amber aquariums turn and wave
But Hopper is drawn to the black windows where
other people, those he cannot see
face down their reflections in the dark
