the future

I suppose it will get
worse
and there will be less
and less
for most of us

siphoned off to fewer
and fewer
who burn the land
and fill the rising seas
and the lakes and rivers
and groundwater
with scum

but if we have nothing
the fewer and fewer
can set their sights
on greater prize
stalk each other
and lay siege
to each other’s fortresses

as we quietly melt away

and our wealth
will be to reinvent ourselves
survive
dance
and play
in our hidden warrens
with bits of earth
reclaimed water
treasured tendrils
of sustenance
and simple
full lived lives
of joy
